Background
Located in Dampier, a major industrial port town in the Pilbara region in the northwest of Western Australia, Sodexo manages Rio Tinto’s newly refurbished 568-room FIFO accommodation, Peninsula Palms Village. Diverting food waste from landfill and reducing the high cost of waste management in a remote area was a key priority for this facility.
The Green Solution
As one of the largest food service providers in Australia, Sodexo was seeking a solution to further close the loop on food waste while creating operational efficiencies. With an ambitious goal to reduce their carbon emissions by 34% by 2025 (vs 2017) and Net Zero by 2045. Sodexo is the first food services company to align its objectives to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
Quantifiable Results
Since the initial installation in April 2021, WasteMaster has delivered significant results for Peninsula Palms. This includes to date:
65.9 tonnes of food waste diverted from landfill
60% reduction in waste disposal volumes
124.74 tonnes of CO2 eq reduction for the site
Positive Outcomes
A number of positive outcomes have been generated due to the installation of WasteMaster at Peninsula Palms.
• Removed issues of skip bin odour and vermin.
• Reduced frequency of skip bin pick up by condensing waste.
