Background
A residential development comprising five apartment buildings, Riviere Apartments sought to implement a process to remove food waste from their general waste, remove additional bins from the kerbside and reduce the number of truck movements to site. As a Multi Unit Development (MUD) with many residents and their continual movement, food waste resulted in issues with smell, leakages and an undesirable living environment.
The Green Solution
With the goal to create a new process of tenants to separate their food waste from general waste and reduce the weight and volume picked up each week, a WasteMaster 400 was installed with a grant from to Yarra City Council to prove the effectiveness of an onsite MUD organics solution.
Positive Outcomes
Since installation, 13.7 tonne of food waste has been eliminated from landfill, leading to 4.2 tonne of residual produced helping to power up to 315 homes for a week – or six homes for a year.
Adoption of a new process for tenants to ensure food waste separation from general waste, reducing the weekly quantity of waste collected and sent to landfill.
Reduction in general waste management costs and reduced truck movements around the council precinct.
Cleaner areas, especially around the dumpsters in the bin rooms.
Environmental and Operational Benefits
Organic waste is converted on site at a low power requirement, diverting this waste from landfill, preventing associated greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing CO2 emissions from transport.
No additives, microbes or water are required for the conversion process.
Residue from the conversion retains the organic waste’s calorific value making it ideal to produce green energy and other resources.
Local, responsive support provided by an Australian company, including remote management and monthly reporting.
