Sustainability Guide Editorial on Food Waste in Independent Schools’ Bursars Association Publication

Green Eco Technologies has received publication in the Sustainability Guide editorial for the Independent Schools’ Bursars Association (ISBA), highlighting the impact that improved food waste management can offer in the continuing drive towards net zero and meeting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

As technology has advanced, so too have the opportunities and initiatives to reduce, manage and repurpose food waste for schools to more accurately measure and process waste on site utilising systems such as our award-winning WasteMaster which breaks down the cellular structure of food, releasing moisture and reducing the total volume by up to 80%.

As our UK Commercial Director Katie Young writes in our editorial for ISBA, “The historic methods of managing food waste at landfill or waste to water are not fit for the future or the environment. Developments in technology have advanced significantly in the last few years and there are now initiatives that reduce the burden and indeed cost of managing food waste and will allow your school to become more sustainable”.

Improvements to catering including closer data management and redistributing surplus edible food via charities ensures that as much as possible, food is not wasted. However, even with the best processes in place, food waste is inevitable and whether this is from preparation, canteen or plate waste, catering for large numbers of individuals in sites such as schools will still undoubtedly create significant waste output.

The use of technology such as our WasteMaster system brings benefits including up-to-date monitoring, on site waste reduction and the creation of a valuable by-product which can be collected and repurposed into reusable resources through anaerobic digestion.
